Alice in Zombieland - by Gena Showalter

Title: Alice in Zombieland
Author: Gena Showalter
Published: 25 Sep 2012
Series: White Rabbit Chronicles #1
Rating: 4 stars
Synopsis:
She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.
Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.
Her father was right. The monsters are real.
To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

I'm not sure how long this book has been on my "To Read" bookshelf, but I have found myself with the trilogy sitting there staring out at me and begging me to read them. I finally picked up this first book as there is a zombie theme this month for Little Book Owl's online book club on Goodreads called "Little Book Club" who the majority of voted to read the book -- so I joined them and picked it up too.

My favourite character had to be Cole, in this novel. Hot, badass, violent yet sweet -- all of that. Followed closely by a tie between Ali and Kat. Ali because she went from giving in to her Dad's opinions and fears, to showing how badass and take-charge she could really be. Kat because she was still down to earth and herself even when horrible things happened to her.

I think the only problems I found were that there was not really much connection to the Alice in Wonderland story that we have come to know; basically only the name and the rabbit came through, with a couple of chapter titles thrown in. Also that in this first book (Alice in Zombieland) you never really find out what caused the visions that only Cole and Ali can see between them, but hopefully that will uncover itself within the next book of the series.

It was a good take on zombies though as they are still the cracking, wounded, groaning type of zombies that everyone seems to like. Yet the twist is that they are on the spirit plane and aren't tangible to humans in natural form. Hmm.

Overall, it was still a pretty good book.
